“So,” said LeBlanc, giving Freta a shrewd look, “maybe we should include Myron on our team?”

Freta didn’t know how to take that — disapproval, sarcasm, or amusement. Reading Roberta was still a work in progress.

Freta had gotten off the phone listening wide-eyed to Myron’s account of Trovotka’s odd contact and story about seeing Croft driving on Grotto Road. She then explained to LeBlanc that Myron had indeed been out to Trovotka’s place with her, along for the ride to see if more volunteers were needed for the search. It was a weak rationalization, and Freta didn’t think LeBlanc bought it. The older RCMP detective pursed her lips and grunted something Freta didn’t catch.

“Why would Trovotka phone Myron with this alleged sighting? You said they barely spoke?” LeBlanc asked after a moment’s silence.

Freta was obliged to mention that after Myron had another short encounter with Hans at a coffee shop, where he discovered that Myron was not RCMP.

“This Myron of yours … he’s not some sort to Clark Kent who transforms himself into a super sleuth?”

Well, I’m no Lois Lane, Freta thought but said nothing.

“Never mind,” LeBlanc said gruffly. “Phone the Trovotka residence and tell Hans or whoever is at the other end that he needs to make an official statement and that he should come to this office by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, or we’ll come out and bring him in. I’m through chasing him while he plays games.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Freta said crisply.

With that, LeBlanc rolled her swivel chair backward, almost hitting the wall, got up, and marched over to Reuben’s office. She knocked twice, opened the door, and stepped in, closing it firmly behind her.

Some time later, she re-emerged and plopped herself back into the seat, looking exasperated. She made eye contact with Freta, sitting two desks opposite her. “Did you get a hold of Trovotka? Or anyone else out there?”

“No, I left a message for him to come in as suggested if he didn’t want us to intrude on him at home.”

LeBlanc’s scowl lessened, and she nodded. “If he’s smart, he’ll get the message. Otherwise, I am going out there, and everyone will be hauled in for questioning. They probably will be anyway, on second thought.”

She paused and picked up and fiddled with a pen. “Indulge me for a moment so that I get this straight. Trovotka doesn’t like cops, especially female cops, yet he wants to get this off his chest, right?”

“That’s my take.”

“He knows Myron is associated with you, and he tells him that he saw Croft on Grotto Road early Sunday morning about the time Raglan was in the process of disappearing and/or getting killed.” LeBlanc paused and put the pen down on the desk. “Does that make sense? Perhaps more importantly, why is he telling us this? Even if Croft was out there, why step forward? Conscience or something else? I guess I don’t get his motive.”

“He told Myron he came forth because it was his civic duty or something to that effect.”

“I’m not buying that.
